Integrated Communication for Engineering - I

Designed for first-year undergraduate engineering students, this course develops foundational communication competencies through structured practice in reflection, presentations, conversations, and teamwork. It introduces communication as an essential engineering capability, enabling students to think critically, communicate clearly, collaborate effectively, and reflect on their own growth from the outset of their university journey.

Course Overview

The course progresses from self to others: students begin with self-awareness, intentionality, and reflection; practise communicating ideas through presentations; develop listening, questioning, disagreement, and dialogue; and apply these capabilities in collaborative team work.

The four connected modules are Self-Discovery, Presentations, Conversations, and Teamwork. Workshops provide shared concepts and experiential activities, while small-group tutorials provide practice, coaching, and individual feedback.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to:
1. Describe their strengths, working style, and goals using evidence-based self-assessment and life-design tools.
2. Deliver a structured, confident oral presentation and defend their arguments under live questioning.
3. Practise active listening, read nonverbal cues, and give and receive feedback constructively within a team.
4. Engage in critical dialogue, construct and interrogate arguments, and communicate productively across differing views.
5. Reflect critically on their communication growth across the semester.
