Mechatronics

Students learn to build devices that use sensors and actuators controlled by a microprocessor. The course uses the Arduino "ecosystem" with a Raspberry Pi Pico computer, paired with sensors, lights, and motors, enabling students to build machines that can sense, think, and act.

Course Overview

The course introduces the foundations of mechatronics through electronics, embedded systems and mechanics. Students learn circuits, sensors, actuators, microprocessors, control systems and communication protocols while gaining practical experience by designing, building and testing mechatronic devices using the Arduino ecosystem.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand basic circuits and electronic components.
  • Develop familiarity with microprocessors, sensors and actuators.
  • Apply mechanics and control concepts in mechatronic systems.
  • Integrate hardware and software to build functional devices.

Learning Outcomes

  • Discuss core mechatronics concepts.
  • Design, build and test mechatronic devices.
  • Apply electronics, control and programming concepts to projects.
  • Develop confidence to pursue independent electronics and robotics projects.
  • Students are expected to use instructional websites, component datasheets and reference materials recommended during lectures.
