The World of AI
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has pervaded all aspects of human life and is rapidly transforming our planet. It is also posing newer questions at us concerning productivity, creativity, employment, sustainability, among others. This course provides a comprehensive introduction to AI tailored for freshmore engineering students with no prior experience in the field. It traces the historical evolution of AI, its diverse applications across daily life and Industry, and the implications of using AI from the perspectives of ethics and sustainability. By the end of the course, students will have a good foundation in AI terminology, an appreciation for its diverse applications, and an understanding of the ethical, societal, and environmental implications of AI technologies. This course aims to inspire and equip the next generation of engineers to engage with AI thoughtfully and innovatively.
Course Overview
The curriculum is divided into three themes: Foundations and History of AI, AI Across Daily Life and Industry, and Impact and Future of AI.
In the first theme, students will explore the fundamental concepts and history of AI, gaining insights into how AI technologies have evolved and the key milestones that have shaped its development. They will also be exposed to some fundamental concepts and problems that have advanced AI while tracing its trajectory from a more rules-based AI to machine learning to deep learning.
The second theme delves into the diverse applications of AI across various daily life and industries. Students will investigate how AI is revolutionizing manufacturing, finance, transportation, entertainment, education, and agriculture. Real-world examples and case studies will illustrate the practical benefits and innovations driven by AI technologies in these sectors.
The final theme addresses the broader implications and future prospects of AI. Lectures will cover ethical considerations, the impact of AI on the job market, and the societal changes AI may bring. Students will also explore emerging trends in AI and consider its role in environmental conservation and sustainable practices.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, each student will have had the opportunity to:
- Students will be able to become familiar with and define key AI concepts and terminologies.
- Students will identify and describe major milestones in the history of AI and trace their trajectories.
- Students will understand how AI is transforming multiple industries.
- Students will critically evaluate and discuss ethical considerations and societal impacts of AI.
