Bio

Dr. M. Balakrishnan is now a honorary Professor in the Department of Computer Science & Engineering, IIT Delhi where he has served as a faculty for 33+ years. His research interests include, assistive technologies, embedded systems, EDA and system level design. He has supervised 21 PhD and more than 200 UG/PG projects at IIT Delhi and published extensively. He has held multiple senior academic leadership positions in IIT Delhi including Dean(Post Graduate Studies & Research), Deputy Director(Faculty) and Deputy Director(Strategy & Planning). He along with Prof. PVM Rao(Mech Engg Department) founded the ASSISTECH laboratory nearly 15 years back which is focussed on mobility and education of visually impaired. The lab has consistently worked towards building affordable assistive technology solutions that addresses the needs of our infrastructure and society. ASSISTECH successes include SmartCane as well as a non-profit startup Raised Lines Foundation which is dedicated to support STEM education of visually impaired by developing tactile diagrams and kits. He is a fellow of ACM as well as INAE and has been a recipient of three National awards, ACM Eugene L Lawler award and IIT Delhi's Life Time award for his work in the disability space.
