The program provides research opportunities across a wide range of interdisciplinary fields including Biosystems Engineering and Human Health, Robotics and Deep Learning, Computer Science and AI-ML, Environment and Clean Energy, Natural Sciences, Humanities, and Language and Linguistics. PhD scholars conduct research supported by four dedicated centres focused on clean energy, water security, personal and equitable health and sustainable agriculture.
PhD scholars at Plaksha work on original research that leads to discipline-specific publications. The program includes a professional development allowance of ₹2 lakh, opportunities for paid teaching and research assistance, and upto six months of international fellowship at reputed institutions abroad with airfare and stipend support to enable collaboration and dissemination of research findings.
Admissions happen twice a year, in the monsoon and spring sessions. Applicants who have qualified in national or international examinations such as CSIR NET-JRF, DBT-JRF, UGC NET-JRF, GATE, IIT-JAM, or GRE are exempt from the written test and are invited directly for the interview. Other shortlisted applicants must take a written test based on the NET/GATE syllabus of the relevant discipline before being considered for the interview.
Plaksha University provides competitive financial support to PhD scholars. Candidates with a four-year bachelor's degree and a two-year master's degree (such as an MTech) receive a monthly stipend of ₹48,000. Those with a four- or five-year degree (such as a BTech or MSc) receive ₹42,000 per month in the first year, which increases to ₹48,000 in subsequent years. PhD scholars also pay only nominal fees and receive a 95% tuition fee waiver in exchange for 10 hours of teaching assistance per week.
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: a one-year master's degree with at least 55 percent marks after a four-year bachelor's program; a two-year master's degree with at least 55 percent marks after a three-year bachelor's program; a four-year bachelor's degree with at least 75 percent marks; an MPhil with at least 55 percent marks; or an equivalent qualification. Applicants who have qualified in national or international examinations such as CSIR NET-JRF, DBT-JRF, UGC NET-JRF, GATE, IIT-JAM, or GRE are exempt from the written test and are invited directly for the interview.
