As the former Vice Chancellor at BITS Pilani, Prof. Jain has been responsible for planning and implementing the complete transformation of BITS Pilani as a research-led university. He is also a senior academic advisory at Ashoka University. He is a co-inventor, with researchers from Cisco Systems, in seven US patents. He had also helped build and launch India’s first data network, ERNet in 1989. He has been a member of several apex committees, including Governing Council of CDAC, DRDO’s Naval Research Board, Technology Assessment Board of Microsoft Research, and Boards of Governors of IIT Delhi, IIT Roorkee and IIIT Delhi.
