Bio

Rajesh Gupta is a professor in the Department of Computer Science & Engineering at UC San Diego, California. He received his B. Tech. in Electrical Engineering from IIT Kanpur, India in 1984, MS in EECS from UC Berkeley in 1986 and a Ph. D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in 1994.

Earlier he worked as a circuit designer at Intel Corporation, Santa Clara, California as a member of three successful processor design teams; and on the Computer Science faculty at University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and UC Irvine.

His research interests span topics that have recently come to be characterized under embedded, cyber-physical systems and more recently under Internet-of-Things. Regardless of the title, the focus of the research has been on methods and tools to make things better (e.g., more energy efficient, reliable), or enable others (mostly designers, architects) to do things better. To the extent a problem area requires it, there is a focus on creating usable artifacts, or at least find the limits on what is achievable in practice. His past contributions include SystemC modeling and SPARK parallelizing high-level synthesis, both of which have been incorporated into industrial practice. His publications and patents cover various aspects of embedded systems design, design automation, clock design, data-path synthesis, system-on-chip modeling and dynamic power management.

Earlier Gupta lead or co-lead DARPA-sponsored efforts under the Data Intensive Systems (DIS) and Power Aware Computing and Communications (PACC) programs on role of adaptation in energy efficient system architectures. His ongoing projects are focused on efficient compositional synthesis of system-chips, microelectronic variability, accurate timing and synchronization for the integrated systems.

Gupta is a recipient of the Chancellor's Fellow at UC Irvine, UCI Chancellor's Award for excellence in undergraduate research, National Science Foundation CAREER Award, two Departmental Achievement Awards and a Components Research Team Award at Intel. Gupta and his students have received a best demonstration paper award at ACM BuildSys'16 , best paper award at IEEE/ACM DCOSS’08 and a best demonstration award at IEEE/ACM IPSN/SPOTS’05.

Gupta served as an advisor to Tallwood Venture Capital, RealIntent, Calypto and Packet Digital Corporation. Gupta served as founding Chair of the ACM/IEEE Conference on Models and Methods in Codesign (MEMOCODE) and founding Co-Chair of ACM/IEEE/IFIP Conference on Codesign and System Synthesis (CODES+ISSS). Gupta served as editor-in-chief of IEEE Design & Test of Computers, founding editor-in-chief of IEEE Embedded Systems Letters.

Gupta is a Fellow of the IEEE and the ACM.  Gupta serves as associate director of the Qualcomm Institute at UCSD. He holds QUALCOMM Endowed Chair in Microelectronic Embedded Systems.
